How to Properly Place Treadmills

Unsafe Placement of Treadmills

Cords extending behind the treadmills present a tripping hazard.

When you lay out your fitness center or set up your new treadmill at home, the location where you place your machine matters!

For safety purposes, you need to think about the wiring. When cords extend over an area that gets a lot of foot traffic, this presents a tripping hazard.

Keeping Users Safe

Even if people manage to walk over the cords without tripping, the wear and tear can lead to damage, increasing the risk of electrical shock.

In the photo, you can see that the outlets are behind the treadmills, which is another dangerous way to place cords.

Placing Treadmills Inside Your Home

If you have a personal treadmill in your home, you also need to carefully consider how you place it. Out-of-the-way rooms like basements and garages may seem like the best place, but basements flood easily, and your garage will be uncomfortable in the winter and summer months. This could damage your treadmill or lead to you skipping your workouts!

The key is to find a home for your treadmill that is out of the way, so it isn’t a hazard. We recommend placing it in a spot that gets little foot traffic. You also want to put it in a place where your runs will be enjoyable. Bonus points if you find an area with extras like:

  • A TV: You can catch up on your favorite shows while getting a workout.
  • Windows: Enjoy some sunshine while you sweat.
  • A Fan: A little airflow can go a long way toward keeping you cool and comfortable.
  • Wireless Speakers: If your treadmill doesn’t have these built in, some $20 speakers can make it easier to hear your music or TV show.
