Regular exercise is not only good for our bodies but also for our mental health. During shelter in place we have received many calls with requests to assemble new equipment or repair older equipment so that customers can remain active while at home.
One thing that we find is a lack of understanding around the value of equipment maintenance. The most common thing we hear is “I didn’t know I had to do that!” For example, dust can form a film on the unit and create problems. We always recommend a thorough dusting weekly to maintain equipment.
While you are at home, here are some tips for maintaining your fitness equipment:
- Clean the lower surface of the equipment with soap and water or disinfectant wipes.
- Clean the electronic console with a dry cloth. Never spray cleaner directly on the console. Spray on the cloth and then wipe.
- If you were given lubricant from Fitness Machine Technicians or your manufacturer:
- Bikes - spray the handle bar posts and the seat post (if it adjusts) with silicone spray. Also spray the adjustment handles.
- Spin bikes - lubricate the chains. Use a light oil (for example, chain saw oil) and apply with a paint brush. Make sure the pedal arms are tight and not wobbly.
- Treadmills – lubricate the deck and belt. Here is a video on how to do this correctly.
- Make sure your cardio equipment is directly plugged into an outlet, not into a power strip with multiple electronics. Treadmills should be plugged into a dedicated outlet for best performance and longevity of the machine.
